Love his music. Opening of the Gloria for the Coll Reg evening setting gives me tingles down my back whenever I hear it.

Splendid music.

Especially fond of his organ music, which I often use.

recommend his setting of Ps 42 (Like as the Hart) - music to send shivers down your spine!

Love him too. A Hymn for St. Celilia is a favourite, but do check out his earlier (1920) setting in G. Magnificent.

What is your favourite Howells setting of the Canticles? No fair citing the Sarum Service! Wink (Conflict of interest?)

I would agree with you on those! Perhaps my overall favourite is the St. Paul's.

Of his organ music, I like the 3 Rhapsodies and some of the Psalm Preludes. There is also a neat C minor sonata.

Not to hijack the thread, but the Percy Whitlock organ sonata is supreme! Razz

Yes, I am an organist. I always wanted to serve in a cathedral but I just got a job in The City. (Financial stuff, so won't being playing much.)

I love French organ music and have plenty to say, but this is not the right forum. I don't wish to get in trouble with the administrator. Rolling Eyes

I love Howells - and Coll Reg is probably my favourite communion setting.

Does anyone know what his other communion settings/masses are like? I managed to get hold of the score for the Coventry Mass, which is quite dissonant, a bit like the Requiem. Has some beautiful moments but a bit heavy going...
