|

Hi all!
On Monday last, I visited the church of St Thomas the Apostle on the Isle of Harty, Sheppey, Kent.
This is a very remote community, a pub, a few cottages and the church. It has no mains electricity, only oil lamps, and the organ, which was locked up at the time, and appears to have one manual, is bellows operated by hand! I pulled the lever for the bellows and a chord came out!
They only have a service once a month.
Is this organ unique? or are there lots of other bellows operated by hand organs?

I did a carol service in St James, Stanstead Abbots several years ago. That had no electricity either and a hand bellow for the organ. The only warm people were those directly in front of the gas heaters and the boy pumping the organ. The organist claimed the dodgy notes were as a result of his fingers slipping on the ice on the keys!
John.

The church at Orchardleigh in Somerset (featured last year in the BBC 2 'Passion for Churches' series, has got no electricity and the organ is hand pumped. The music desk light runs off a car battery
Many years ago I played for Matins in a Church of Ireland church on the far west coast of Eire, near Leenane. The instrument was a foot pumped harmonium, and the church was lit by candlelight (at 11.00 am because if the awful weather )
