Hiya Folks.
I am digging Herbert at present. The anthem "like a hart" is one of the greatest things I have ever heard.
I notice that Priory have done a couple of series of his canticles and organ works.
Are these great?
Also, is there anywhere that lists all the psalms he set?
Cheers
Chris
PS-Thanks for the advice regarding Hyperion and Priory. Most appreciated.
PPS-Anyone dig Constant Lambert? |

There has been an earlier thread here about Howells which you may enjoy reading:

The five volume Priory series is quite fine, though there are no boys. Otherwise, if you dig through the Priory "Mag & nunc" series, you'll find 14 of Howells's settings, all with boys, I believe.
Personally, I'm quite fond of his choral music. My favourite anthem is certainly
A Hymn for St. Cecilia
. I love many of his canticle settings, though -as you obviousy know- only a few of them are done on a regular basis at Evensong.
(I "dig" Lambert a great deal, but that's rather outside of this forum.) |

Yes. I suppose Lambert is a bit off. He didn't write any music for the church, although the "Summer's Last will and Testament" is spiritual.
(Sorry)
Howells Organ works are fantastic, like an Anglican Messiaen at times, but not as minimal.
I will need to find out more about the man. |
