Rumour has it that Malcolm Archer is leaving St.Pauls to take up a post at Winchester College.

Apparently Adrian Lucas is leaving Worcester, not to mention David Hill leaving St John's.

Any background on the St Paul's business, anyone?

I understand that David Gedge is retiring at easter 2007 due to ill health. He sadly collapsed during a concert recently.

I remember it being very nice - but it was around 1973 when I played it. I've got an LP of Hazel Davies playing Brecon & Bangor Cathedrals.

Interesting (or not?) that they've appointed a singer rather than an organist. I wonder if that means St Paul's will be dispensing of the main organ and singing pre-C17 music? Smile

John.

I say 'good on them' for thinking outside the box and appointing an extremely capable guy who can't play the organ!

Our DoM barely plays for the opus dei at all and, even though he's a very good player, could actually get away with never playing the organ in the church.

Deans and Chapters have for too long assumed that being an organist makes you ideally qualified to conduct and train a choir - a lot of organists plainly know nothing about singing. It's a sign of the changing times that, of the four shortlisted candidates for the job, two were not instrumentalists but singers.

We can only hope that petty beaurocracy doesn't drive him away!

Best to all

Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition!

I believe Stevie Farr, Tim Byram-Wigfield and Mike McCarthy were also in the running.
