I just posted this on the Radio3 Message Boards.
I'll repeat it here:
Just finished reading this wonderful book and would be curious if others have also read it. It is certainly self-recommending, and a "must read" for anyone interested in Anglican Church music... which would be everybody here?
I've always rather enjoyed Stainer's anthems and service music, yet I had no idea he wrote SO many hymn tunes- some 170 are listed. Yikes!
And what a cruel pity that one of Stainer's best hymn tunes, "Rest" is not included in the NEH. For shame...
Any comments? |

"Rest" appears twice in A&M and once in A&M Revised, the two hymnals I was brought up on. Like most of Stainer's music, there's a stong (unwarranted) bias against it, and it doesn't surprise that it has been omitted from newer publications.

What is your opinion of the A&M Revised? Should I pick up a copy? |

Well I much prefer it to EH, but can't say I've had any experience with NEH to make a comparison there. It's hardly a recent publication, but having editors such as Sir Sydney Nicholson, Dr.Gerald Knight, and Dr.J.Dykes Bower gives some cause for recommendation. _________________ The older I get, the better I was. |
