Indeed - often because the choirmaster doesn't like to do them. You get turgid singing, no difference in organ or singing between verses, etc.

I wouldn't normally dig up a really old thread but having just heard Peterborough Cathedral sing CE, I couldn't resist revisiting the pointing of the Gloria. Theirs is a variation which I can't recall ever hearing. I think this is the pointing:
Glory ' be to the ' Father: And to the Son, ' and to the ' Holy ' Ghost;
As it ' was in the be- ' ginning: Is now and ever shall be. ' World without ' end. A ' men
Different, but I like it!
Sometimes I don't have anything better to do, wickedchorister

I think that what they still use, it was quite tricky when I first started singing in the voluntary choir there - all the psalms were neatly printed out on sheets of A4 and given out as appropriate - however the gloria wan't included made my early attemtps a bit hit and miss... _________________ --

They used the Oxford Psalter during dad's time. I've looked in his (v. well-used!) copy: I can't see the Gloria pointing they used anywhere in this - the first part is as used, but the second half is completely different:
As it ' was in . the beg-inning: is now and ever shall be ' world with-out . end. A'men. Hope this helps, Martyn |

Thanks for your input Martyn.
Like I said, it certainly made me sit up and take notice, and I do like it very much. I must get myself an Oxford Psalter......perhaps there's one on Ebay.
