We seem to have had a sudden rush of 'new members', all who have,
intererestingly
, the same format to their username (name and a four-figure number). But no posts from any of them.
Is anybody out there?

Well
I'm out there!
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. Perhaps these new members are just
lurking
and waiting for the appropriate moment to pounce.
Like myself, I suspect you're a veteran (cf an earlier post of mine) of a more volatile forum elsewhere, but things are quieter here. I've grown to like it, however. As a young man that's just
crazy
about the Anglican church and all the glory it represents, I have so much appreciated what some of the more level-headed members have contributed.
So diapason8 (cute name, btw) why don't you start some new topics? If I have anything to contribute, well I'll be there. And cheers to you... |

They are all spam merchants, who register with websites in their signature. Unfortunately for them, I've hacked the forum so that unless you login you can't see the memberlist. This stops Google (et al) from linking to their nefarious websites. I also whiz through the userlist deleting them every so often.

Thanks for the reassurance, John.
A further thought - is it possible to trace these new members and identify whether their registrations come from a single source?
Regards,
Nigel |

Unfortunately, they have returned in force and are now posting offensive nonsense on the forum. Can you fire a virtual broadside from the Trompette en chamade?

John... what's going on? Who did that sticky? They're invading our precious forum. No, I'll go better: fire up the en chamades at St. John the Divine in NYC. That'll fix 'em. All 127 centimeters of wind pressure! Bring on the John Cook
Fanfare

Guys, if that happens again when I'm not watching, can you send me a PM?
Thanks, John (in admin guise). |

But I thought you were
always
watching! If you might kindly supply us with a schedule, perhaps I could then vent my true feelings vis a vis that
glorious
instrument in Gloucester Cathedral. |

Just a suggestion from a newbie on these forums.
I have had an involvement in Internet Relay Chat channel management for many years, and have a suggestion to offer regarding these particular spam bots.
Can you fix it so that a human eye will
always
authenticate applications? That would likely prevent this situation from recurring in the present form.
I know that would increase the load on the moderators.

That is what I have done. Every couple of days it is a mass delete of spam (robot?) users. They are quite easy to spot as the subscription email usually bounces and they usually have a rather obvious "commercial" website listed.
