I hope the recording engineers (and the mics) can cope with three choirs giving full blast in both the Blair and Elgar
Do all three choirs sing the psalm together?
John. |

Anyone listen to CE from St. Mary's in Edinburgh?
It went smoothly, happy to report. Several years ago I was there and the fire alarm went off just before the second reading! No one was really certain what to do, but eventually the fire alarm stopped and everything returned to normal, readings, the rest of
Blair in B minor
.
The Aston was delectable. I wish some choir would do a full CD of his music. I was a bit disappointed with the Whitlock. Surely the rhythms needed more "snap". |

I really enjoyed CE this week. The canticles by David Ashley White were the highlight for me.
Note that this choir apart from a mixed top line, also has a female Choral Scholar on the Alto line, the first Cathedral with daily choral services in the UK to do so.

Are we all still listening to CE? Last Sunday's broadcast from Hereford was exceptional, though as an Elgarian, I can't say the final voluntary worked terribly well in transcription. Still, it was beautifully played. |

Ever since I bought Vol 1 of the Priory series Psalms of David, I have held Hereford in the highest esteem and this week's service was no exception. _________________ The older I get, the better I was. |

I wonder whether you are familiar with Keith John's transcription of this piece on Hyperion CDA67363 'Enigma Variations / Organ Sonata, played at the Temple Church, London. He has a very different interpretation, and I'd be interested in your opinion, Jason. If you don't have this CD, then PM me and I'll send you an mp3 of the Finale.

Well yes, I am familiar with it. Elgar's
Imperial March
might as well have been written for organ, but
Enigma
is too private, too inward, too tied to its orchestration to work properly in any other format. Conceived as an organ piece, it is no different from one of those Reger monstrosities. In its original orchestration, all the psychological depth of this magnificent music is given full flower. The organ cannot match that... IMHO of course!

Marvellous service, especially the 2 Warlock pieces, and the descant to Veni Emanuel.
Interesting treble tone being cultivated by Andrew Nethsingha. Quite different from that of David Hill's trebles, don't you think? _________________ The older I get, the better I was. |

Can't recall David Hill's tone, but I suspect that AN's preference might be different - interesting in view of the fact they both served asz Organ Students under George Guest.
I liked the Milner piece, which I don't recall hearing before. I prefer the Warlock "Adam lay" a little quicker personally, and I thought the hymns a little rushed. A very good service, though - an excellent start to the season.
What Advent pieces are anyone doing? I'm replacing the Ofertory Hymn with an Advent carol or motet. Yesterday it was Come thou Redeemer of the earth arr Willcocks; next week it's The truth from above arr RVW. |

Hi Damon,
Missed the original broadcast -way too busy- but will make a point to give it a listen within a few days.
Cheers and Merry Christmas. |

What about Kings today? Loved the arrangement of Ding Dong!
Was it just me, or did it sound like the octave couplers were out most of the time in the congregational hymns? |
