Psalms of David cover
Psalms of David (Vol. 6)

Conductor: Andrew Millington

Organ: Geoffrey Morgan

Priory PRCD 416

This disc was the first in Priory's series of the same name. The series is interesting for the comparison it allows between the different contributing choirs, the singing of the psalms being widely considered the best way of measuring a choir's true quality.

It says something of the continuity of the musical tradition at Guildford that nearly all the chants to which the psalms are sung there have remained attached to the same psalms, unchanged, for more than 30 years.

Priory PRC 415

This pot-boiler cassette seems to have been mainly intended for visitors to the cathedral. This is a shame, since it contains much extremely good material. Might be worth pestering Priory for a copy.

The Christmas Carols Album

Conductor: Andrew Millington

Crimson CRIMCD01

Somewhat along the lines of the old Platinum carols record of 1966, this disc celebrates the spirit of Christmas with 20 traditional Christmas carols, many of them specially arranged. There is some very fine singing on this disc.

Organ: Geoffrey Morgan

Crimson CRIMCD02

Guildford's second disc on the Crimson label is in fact their first-ever ‘hymns' release. The disc contains twenty of the greatest and best-loved hymns in the Anglican repertoire. The organ “introductions” are hardly typical of modern cathedral usage and seem oddly out of place.

Lammas 087D

Lammas websiteThis is probably the best Guildford disc of of recent years. The trebles are particularly good, the sound more than reminiscent of Barry's choir. There are particularly fine performances, including the title track and the very demanding Howells Te Deum. The recording quality is excellent. The entire disc is Guildford-oriented — several ‘Guildford' composers are featured (amongst them Ives, Moore, Rose, Millington, Clucas and Forbes) and, to complete the picture, the disc itself was produced by Barry Rose.
