The Choirs of Rochester Cathedral have an e-mail newsletter - I reproduce the contents of the December 1998 issue here (but shall not do so in future). If you like what you see, go to Rochester's own site, and subscribe so that you get a copy sent to your own mailbox.

The Choral Calendar has certainly been busy, and will be even more so on the approach to Christmas. (I haven't even thought about my Xmas shopping) If you are looking for the ideal Christmas present then have a quick browse at the Gift Shop as you'll find some of the special offers very competitive. If you live in the UK, you'll find the prices particularly good, even when including shipping charges. And of course, every time a purchase is made the website makes a little money. The money is going towards a prize fund - and we'll notify you through the Newsletter when the competition is held.

The Gift Shop features a few books and CDs but you can search through some of the main shops on the Internet for any topic. If you can recommend a book or CD then please email us.

A highly recommended book is the Directory of Composers for Organ by Henderson, John Christopher With over 5000 entries, this 532 page hardback book is one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of published original pipe organ music ever compiled. The music is presented in chronological order and for many composers these are the most definitive listings yet published. Life dates and brief biographies of numerous minor composer/organists are accessible here for the first time. There are 35 portraits of composers from the era 1880-1940.

~ Why not forward this newsletter to friends and colleagues interested in the English Choral Tradition...

As you may have heard, the organist, William Whitehead has now left to teach in London and to take up a post at St Mary Bourne Street. We will all miss him and wish him the very best in the future. Keep in touch William!

The Choir has released a new recording under the wing of Herald HAVPCD 223. A Christmas Carol features readings by Charles Dickens (who lived at Rochester) read by one of his descendants, Gerald Dickens. I hope that we may be able to offer it, or at least audio samples on the website soon.

I am also pleased that we have a new snippet in 'What's it like to be in the Choirs' by the new Girl Head Chorister, Rachel Seth-Smith. [Rochester] Webmaster report: Just like to say that the site is very busy indeed. The most popular sections of the website are 'Recordings' and 'What's it Like to be in One of the Choirs?'

Many thanks and have an excellent Christmas,
