Hill/Holditch. Rebuilt 1973. 4 manuals, sited on the North Choir Triforium. The last rebuild was in 1974 by the firm of Hill, Norman and Beard, who made various tonal alterations including the provision of a neo-Baroque Choir organ. The console, which is behind the metal grillwork underneath the most eastern bay of the organ and visible from the South Choir aisle, has four manuals and pedals and 84 stops, which control c. 4000 pipes ranging in size from 1/2" (12mm) to 32' (9.75m)! All of the pipes speak into the Quire, with the exception of the Tuba (one of the finest of its type), which is housed in the case in the North Transept. The organ is particularly fine for music of the 19/20th centuries and for its main role of accompanying services. (Extracted from a specification leaflet kindly supplied by Andrew Lumsden.) |

Other Information: |
The Lichfield Festival takes place in mid-July annually, and brings together some of the world's most famous musicians. From Lichfield's own site and from here, it is possible to link to a site (maintained by former Lichfield chorister, Richard Shakeshaft) which gives current and past music service lists. This could be an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to research the daily musical fare of a typical English cathedral. |
